Could the Blackhawks trade this forward by the deadline?

The Chicago Blackhawks have had a tough start to the 2026-27 season. At the time of this writing, they have a 3-6-0 record.

If the Blackhawks remain in the bottom portion of the NHL standings as we get closer to the trade deadline, they could move out some of their pending unrestricted free agents. Due to this, one of their veteran forwards is already creating some chatter as a potential trade candidate.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Scott Powers named Blackhawks forward Teuvo Teravainen as the team's top "under-the-radar" trade candidate for this season.

"The Blackhawks aren’t likely to make many moves other than potentially trading their 2027 first-round picks, but Teravainen could be a trade candidate. He’s on an expiring contract and began the season as a healthy scratch," Powers wrote.

If the Blackhawks aren't a playoff team this year, it could make sense for them to move Teravainen. This is especially so if they do not have plans to keep him around in Chicago beyond this campaign.

If the Blackhawks did make Teravainen available for trade this season, it is fair to wonder if he could generate some interest. While he had a tough 2025-26 season, he has a strong resume and is showing early signs of bouncing back this campaign. In seven games so far in 2026-27, he has posted two goals and five points. He also had 58 points in 82 games for Chicago just back in 2024-25.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what happens with Teravainen this season. If the Blackhawks move up in the standings and are in the playoff race near the deadline, it would probably be best to keep him.
