There is no worry that Connor Bedard isn't going to sign with the Chicago Blackhawks off of his entry-level deal, but he might shock many with the term he decides to go.
Chris Johnston said, "It's not a foregone conclusion he'll sign eight years. I'm sure the Blackhawks will want that, but his side might want a five-year deal."
Most first overall or highly drafted players who are similar skill level to Bedard have almost always signed for eight years out of their entry-level deal. The Blackhawks have the money to throw at him, but by the end of the five years, with the way the salary cap is rising, he would be underpaid, like many have been before him.
Bedard had an impressive first two seasons before even turning 20 years old and he has already taken his game to a whole new level, scoring six goals and 16 points in the first 13 games of the 2025-26 season. While there has been some criticism, he should have put that all to rest by now.
Whether Bedard signs for five years and takes advantage of the cap rising like Auston Matthews did with the Toronto Maple Leafs, or signs for eight years out of his entry-level deal, Bedard is going to be the highest paid player on the Blackhawks. That isn't something that is tough to beat, as the highest AAV for a roster player this season is $5.5 million.
Bedard should get at least $10 million. That is the number Logan Cooley just got. But Cooley isn't a first overall pick and isn't quite playing at the same level Bedard is.
Connor McDavid signed for $12.5 million AAV out of his entry-level deal, and that was years ago. He is the best player in the world though, so Bedard isn't on the same level. But Bedard, if he signs long-term, will see his AAV rise as those three years are a big difference.
I don't think this means Blackhawks fans should be worried he will leave after five years, but he also might not be looking to take team-friendly deals either and is giving himself options.
