Sometimes, it takes an admirable goal to wake up the crowd and the players.

Former Chicago Blackhawks forward Corey Perry knows a thing (or two) about that. Last night, he was allowed to ride shotgun for a game with Connor McDavid.

    He didn't disappoint.

The 39-year-old winger may have only skated for 13:43, but he was influential in those minutes. He opened the scoring for the Edmonton Oilers, who were down 1-0 at the time of his goal.

McDavid had the puck behind the net, circled to the left side, and made a backhand dish to Perry under pressure. Perry made no mistake by deking around the Vancouver Canucks defender and putting the puck out of reach of Kevin Lankinen's pad.

    Rogers Place erupted soon after.

The winger played 54 games last season between the Blackhawks and Oilers. He recorded 22 points, 12 of which were goals.

This past summer, Perry re-signed with the Oilers. He signed a one-year $1.15-million contract. Through games played bonuses in the regular season and playoffs, he could earn an additional $250,000.

Perry has brought his business-like attitude to the Oilers, on and off the ice. Because of his professionalism and work ethic, it made sense for the Oilers to get him back.

With two pre-season games left on the docket for the Oilers, Perry is bound to play at least one more game before they start counting for real.
