Former Blackhawk Corey Perry's Season, Career Could End With Him in the Press Box

Corey Perry, a short-term member of the Blackhawks, might have started his season with Chicago, but could see his season end as a healthy scratch and in the press box in Edmonton as the Oilers host Vancouver in Game 6 of their second-round playoff series on Saturday night.

It also might be the finish of the 39-year-old Perry's 19-season NHL career.

Perry's contract was terminated on Nov. 28 by the Blackhawks for violating team polices. He played only 16 games with Chicago after his rights were acquired from Tampa Bay last June and he signed. a one-year $4 million deal.

On Jan. 22 of this year, he signed with the Edmonton Oilers to help with a playoff push and then in the playoffs. He was a contributor in assisting in the Oilers' drive to the postseason, but he's been a non-factor in the playoffs through almost two rounds.

The Oilers have been giving him less and less ice time as the playoffs and series has gone along. Perry played just 7:11 in Game 5 against the Canucks and he has no points in 10 games this postseason.

Edmonton is down 3-2 to the Canucks in the series and its season is on the line.

Frank Seravalli reported that Adam Henrique was originally in for Perry, but it wasn't confirmed. Ryan Rishaug later reported that Kris Knoblauch, head coach of the Oilers, made it known that there is an illness to someone and wouldn't confirm that Perry is out of the lineup yet. Shortly before the start of the game, Sam Carrick coming into the lineup in place of Perry is the only change for the Oilers.

Perry had four goals and nine points in 16 games for the Blackhawks before the team released him, and eight goals and 13 points in 38 games for the Oilers to wrap up the regular season.

He was a help on the third line and is a strong veteran presence that can get under players' skin. What hasn't happened in the postseason is any offensive production from him.

In a season where Perry should've been a veteran leader on the Blackhawks and then a staple on the Oilers' third line for the playoffs, both have passed him by,
