Marc-Andre Fleury was set to retire after last season and join the Pittsburgh Penguins in the preseason to cap off his career and the place where he started and won two Stanley Cups. But his love for the game and play still at a high level could spell a different outcome for this season.
Fleury wouldn't be joining the Penguins since the team has Tristan Jarry, Arturs Sulivs, and Joel Blomqvist, but there are other teams out there in need of a goaltending upgrade.
Frank Seravalli recently said, "is this the end? I don't think it's the end yet. I have zero doubt...teams will be calling. I have to think one of the teams would be the Edmonton Oilers."
This does make sense as Fleury would be a cheap add and he would have a chance at one last Stanley Cup run with the Oilers, a team that has gone to consecutive finals. The role Fleury would be playing would be perfect for him at this point too.
He played a little less behind Jonas Gustavsson, one of the elite goalies, but could do more. With Stuart Skinner, that could be the case. Calvin Pickard had to step in a lot last season and the one before because of struggles. While Skinner did come to camp in much better shape and there's some hope with the old goaltending coach finally out of the picture, he might not just turn into an elite goalie as some expect.
Fleury wouldn't be a major upgrade, but would still be one behind the strong defensive group of the Oilers. Edmonton is of course the team that was mentioned, but I doubt they would be the only ones showing some interest and have potentially already reached out to Fleury about giving it one more go. I can't imagine the veteran does it for any team that won't have a clear shot at the playoffs.
Count the Chicago Blackhawks out of that, as expected, as the team doesn't require his services again anyways.
