Matt Grzelcyk has finally been signed by another team.
Matt Grzelcyk hit the free agent market on July 1 after the Chicago Blackhawks opted not to re-sign him.
Now, after being an unrestricted free agent for nearly three months, Grzelcyk has finally landed a contract.
The Buffalo Sabres have signed Grzelcyk to a one-year, $850,000 contract for the 2026-27 season.
Given Grzelcyk's plethora of NHL experience, it seemed inevitable that he would land a contract from another club. Now, he has finally found his next team with the Sabres and will be looking to make an impact with the Atlantic Division club from here.
The Sabres' decision to sign Grzelcyk makes a lot of sense. Two of their left-shot defensemen in Olen Zellweger and Mattias Samuelsson are injured. With this, Buffalo needed another blueliner, and Grzelcyk will now provide them with just that.
Grzelcyk posted 12 assists, 28 hits, and 54 blocks in 69 games this past season with the Blackhawks. Overall, he served well as a veteran depth defenseman for Chicago last season. Now, he should have a similar role with the Sabres as they aim to have another successful season in 2026-27.
