Danny Wirtz, the fourth generation of his family to own the Blackhawks, and the Wirtz Corporation are moving their offices to the foot of Chicago's Magnificent Mile.
The Wirtz Corporation, the family controlled umbrella company that owns the Chicago Blackhawks, is moving its headquarters to a vintage Art Deco building on Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River.
The Wirtz Corporation owns the landmark structure at 333 N. Michigan Ave. Designed in 1929, it recently underwent a $75 million renovation and is home to the Blackhawks Store. It's at the site of Ft. Dearborn, the founding settlement for what became the city of Chicago.
For years, the Wirtzes ran their business from offices in at 666 N. Lake Shore Drive, in the former American Furniture Mart. Late patriarchs Arthur, Bill and Rocky Wirtz all had their offices there overlooking Lake Michigan. Danny took charge of the Wirtz Corporation after his father, W. Rockwell "Rocky" Wirtz died on July 25, 2023.
In addition to the Blackhawks and mammoth liquor wholesaler Breakthru Beverage Group, the Wirtz Corporation owns dozens of large buildings around the Chicago area. Most of them are residential; the gem at Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive is the only all-commercial building in the Wirtz portfolio — other than half-ownership of the United Center.
"That building had been in our family for a very long time," said Danny Wirtz, Wirtz Corporation chairman and president. "It's filled with energy for the city, so I love going there.
"It will be a beautiful new headquarters for our family office and its in one of our buildings, which makes it even more special. It's an old vintage gem."
The historic building was by renowned architecture firm Holabird and Root and is recognized for its class Art Deco structure. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service and was designated as a Chicago Landmark by the City of Chicago.
The building's rehabilitation included a full-service amenity floor, fully updated systems, security improvements and newly built tech suites ranging from 1,100 to 10,300 square feet.
