USA Today Network - White Sox Join Blackhawks With Record Losing Season In Chicago

When the hapless Chicago White Sox lost their 10th straight game on Sunday,  2-0 to the New York Mets, they fell to 31-107 and set a new franchise record for most losses in a season.

The Blackhawks' 2023-24 winning percentage wasn't as pathetic, but at 23-53-6 they also set a team record for most losses in a season.

The White Sox are playing their 124 season. The Blackhawks will enter their 99th in 2024-25. So in both cases, the teams reached milestone new lows in the past few months.

Thanks to Calder Trophy winner Connor Bedard, the Blackhawks weren't quite as bad to watch last season as the White Sox are now. But when Bedard and other key players were injured last season, the Blackhawks couldn't score or win over long stretches. Like the White Sox, they relied on a largely a minor-league lineup.

The White Sox depth and injury issues have been even more severe. Up-and-coming players who were projected to be franchise stars just a couple of years ago have been hurt or fizzled out. Sluggers Eloy Jimenez, Yoan Moncada, shortstop Tim Anderson and starter Lucas Giolito top the list

At least the Blackhawks signed eight free agents on July 1 and have several top prospects who should be on the cusp of contributing.

Hopefully the underachievement or injury bug won't impair Bedard and other forwards like Frank Nazar III, as well as defensemen Kevin Korchinski, Artyom Levshunov and Wyatt Kaiser.

It already seems like Lukas Reichel, Chicago's first-round pick in 2020, could wash out.

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks already got some bad news after new goalie Laurent Brossoit underwent surgery for a torn right meniscus last week. Following Taylor Hall last season, Brossoit's a second new player to arrive in Chicago with a knee injury.
