Connor Bedard is the second youngest player on the Chicago Blackhawks this season and the youngest to play more than one game. For what he has done as a 19-year-old is very impressive, especially on a team that ranks 31st in the NHL, 26th in goals for, and 29th in goals against this season, is encouraging.
While Bedard has been impressive, he isn't at the superstar level yet and some of the comparisons to his teammates on the Blackhawks will surprise you.
Bedard is tied for second on Chicago in goals (17), tied for first in assists (35) and is first in points on the team by only two (52) in 65 games. The sophomore is six goals back of Ryan Donato with two more games played and is tied with Teuvo Teravainen in assists. Teravainen also happens to be two points behind Bedard in the same amount of games played.
It has not been a great season in terms of +/- for Bedard or many of the Blackhawks, but the 19-year-old has the second worst +/- on the team at -31. He trails only Tyler Bertuzzi who regularly plays on his line.
Bedard doesn't lead the Blackhawks in even strength goals, power-play goals, or of course shorthanded goals. The young star is tied in third on the team in even strength goals (10) with Nick Foligno and trails Ilya Mikheyev (13) and Donato (20). In terms of power-play goals, Bedard is tied for second (7) with Teravainen. They are one behind Bertuzzi. Mikheyev is the only player on the Blackhawks with a shorthanded goal this season.
Bedard does lead Chicago by a good amount in a few stats though. He is far and above the most played forward on the team averaging 20:13 of ice time per game. The next closest is Teravainen with 16:56.
Despite Bedard having the 15th best shooting percentage on the team this season, he ranks first in shots by 18 (157) over Donato who we've established has been much more effective this season scoring goals.
Bedard is tied for the team lead in assists with Teravainen, but has two fewer assists at even strength while leading the team in assists on the power play with 16.
The 19-year-old ranks 10th on the team in blocked shots (33), which isn't bad at all considering he is the best player on the team, is as young as he is, and is a forward. He isn't much of a hitter (35), but that shouldn't be a prominent part of his game with his size and skill. Bedard is third on the team in takeaways (20), but second worst on the team in giveaways (68). This is a result of having the puck on his stick so much, but he also does have to cut those down and make smarter decisions every time he has the puck. That will come with experience.
It has been a weird year for the Blackhawks after they haven't reached expectations as a whole, changed head coaches, and have finally started to really see the prospects come in and make a mark. It should only be up from here from Bedard and company.
