Former Chicago Blackhawks forward Corey Perry continues to have the worst luck in hockey in recent memory. While it is great to get to the Stanley Cup Final in four of the past five years with four different teams, losing every single one is heartbreaking.
Perry signed with Edmonton in January 2024 after the Blackhawks released him in November for violating team policies. The Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers 2-1 in Monday's Game 7 of the 2024 Final after coming back from down 3-0 in the series.
Perry didn't play a bad game. At times he was noticeable and had the puck on his stick trying to make some plays. He could have done more in his role though. There was only once in the entire game where he tried to get under the skin of the Florida Panthers by stopping right in the crease after goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made a save.
The Panthers only got called for one penalty. If Perry was doing his job as a fourth line pest, maybe a normally highly penalized team would have headed to the box a little more and given Edmonton a bit more of a chance to come back.
Perry won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Anaheim Ducks in his second season in the NHL, but since 2020 has lost with the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning and Oilers.
This was Perry's least productive playoff appearance of the last five years, scoring just one goal and three points in 19 games. He has appeared in the playoffs 16 different times and only twice has he recorded fewer than three points. These came in seven games in 2013 and four games in 2018.
This may be the last go for Perry as he's 39 years old and has slowed down more than expected on the Oilers this season. On the other hand, if there's a team that wants to make the Stanley Cup Final and lose, Perry is going to be a UFA. He's had a great career if this is it, but what a tough way to go out if he does hang up the skates.
