Needing a change in goaltending after numerous early post seasons failures, the Colorado Avalanche decided buy high on starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Conor Timmins, a 2022 first-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick.

Kuemper the previous season finished with a 10-11 record with a .907 save percentage and a 2.22 goals against average. In his first and only season with the Avalanche, he finished with a career high 37 wins and 12 losses with a .907 SV% and a 2.56 GAA.

On his way to winning the Stanley Cup, he finished with a 10-4 record with a .902 SV% and a 2.57 GAA. The summer after he would not re-sign with the Avalanche and sign with the Washington Capitals to a five-year, $26.25 million dollar contract.
