The Florida Panthers have traded forward Mackie Samoskevich for the 25th overall pick (Tampa Bay Lightnings original pick) in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft and a 2027 conditional second round pick (Winnipeg Jets original pick). The conditions that the Panthers will receive the higher of Winnipeg or Columbus 2027 second round pick.
While it might look like the Panthers are cashing in on a younger player that can open some cap room, if you look at their draft picks available, they now have two first-round and two second-round picks this draft and two second-round draft picks next year.
While the Panthers might opt to use them and replenish their pool of prospects they emptied to help build the team that won back-to-back Stanley Cups. Knowing Bill Zito and how this team, despite a down season, is still ready to compete again. We could see these picks be moved for someone like Dylan Larkin or Connor Hellebuyck, with their names on the market.
