Denver, Colo. - The day has finally arrived. The Colorado Avalanche are back from their short trip to Los Angeles to host the Utah Mammoth at Ball Arena for their season home opener.

The Utah Mammoth will play their first regular-season game of the 2025-26 season tonight. Not only that, but this will be their first game with the brand new name.

This morning, aside from Nathan MacKinnon putting his promise to Sidney Crosby to good use by starting out his ice time with a left-handed stick, the Avalanche spent a lot of time working on

    Starting Goaltenders

Scott Wedgewood occupied the starter's crease this morning, meaning he will get the start in goal for the Avalanche.

Wedgewood put up 24 saves on 25 shots in his appearance against the LA Kings, the only one getting past him being a Kevin Fiala shot during a 5-on-3 penalty kill for the Avalanche.

Some good news on the goaltending front for the Avalanche: while it's assumed that Trent Miner will be the backup tonight, Mackenzie Blackwood did join the team for morning skate.

Per Cole Bagley with KSL Sports, Karel Vejmelka should start in net for the Mammoth.

The 300-Game Club Adds a Member Tonight

Joel Kiviranta, currently at 299 games played, will play in his 300th game tonight against the Mammoth.

Kiviranta, Finnish native, joined the Avalanche as a free agent in 2023. Prior to then, he signed with the Dallas Stars in 2019.

Last season, he hit a career-high in scoring - 23 points, 16 goals, 7 assists. His high in points prior to last season came back in 2020-2021 with the Stars at 11 points (6g/5a).

This recent off-season, he signed a one-year extension with the Avalanche valued at $1.25M AAV.
