Florida Panthers fans blasted out FLA Live Arena Monday night singing along to an all too familiar song, “All the Small Things.” Not that the Colorado Avalanche patented that song, but let’s face facts. They used it first.
The Blink 182 song was a staple for Avalanche games at Ball Arena last season and even before.
And some Avs fans were quite adamant on Twitter about it being their song.
While the Avalanche didn’t pay Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker to create the song just for them, most of the hockey world recognizes that it is associated with the boys in burgundy and blue more so than any other team.
Hoppus even sang it before the Avs home opener this season when the Stanley Cup banner was raised to the rafters.
But several other teams have tried to lay claim to it, including the Panthers' Eastern Conference Finals rival Carolina Hurricanes.
Even fellow hockey writers recognize the significance of that song for the Colorado Avalanche.
“I don't like that everyone's ripping off the Avs' "All The Small Things" singalong thing this season. There are a million songs everyone knows. Pick a different one. That one's theirs,” senior writer for The Athletic Mark Lazerus tweeted.
Has any other team duplicated playing “Gloria” at their arenas after the St. Louis Blues won the Cup in 2019? No. So why should other teams be using the same Stanley Cup-winning song as Colorado?
And as if the Avs’ theme song ripoff wasn’t enough, the Panthers' organization had the audacity to drape white pom-poms on the seats at FLA Live Arena on Monday. This was a first.
While most teams around the league stick with rally towels, the Colorado Avalanche have been handing out playoff pom-poms since their inaugural year in Denver 27 years ago. The same season they swept the Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.
For Colorado, the white pom-pom signifies snow rolling down the mountain, like an avalanche. Is it supposed to be someone's sandy hair after laying out at Ft. Lauderdale Beach?
Avs Faithful should take it as a compliment that Panthers fans are mirroring the celebration techniques of the reigning Stanley Cup Champs. Let’s see if it brings them the same results as it did the Avalanche last season.
