Colorado added another late first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Alex Newhook.

Forward Alex Newhook has been traded to the Montreal Canadiens for draft picks and a defenseman, the Colorado Avalanche announced Tuesday.
Gianni Fairbrother was Montreal’s third-round pick, 77th overall, in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
While the 22-year-old missed last season due to a knee injury, he played his first full professional season with the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket in 2021-22. He joined the team at the end of the 2020-21 season. He notched eight points in 28 games in the AHL.
Prior to his pro career, the 6-foot and 204-pound D-man spent four-plus seasons with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League.
In addition to Fairbrother, the Avalanche acquired another first-round draft pick at 31st overall, and one in the second round at No. 37. With those picks, Colorado now has the 27th overall, as well as No. 155 in the fifth round, No. 187 in the sixth round, and No. 219 in the seventh round.
Newhook was Colorado’s first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft at 16th overall and part of the 2022 Stanley Cup-winning team. He totaled 66 points (27g/39a) in 159 career games with the Avalanche and added seven points (1g/6a) in 27 postseason contests.
