The Colorado Avalanche are the best team in the NHL, the Denver Broncos are tied for the best record in the NFL, and the Denver Nuggets are hovering near the top of the NBA. And the Colorado Rockies? Well, they're awful—but thankfully, baseball is not on today’s syllabus.
Not only are we quite literally a mile high, but at the moment, we’re operating at that same altitude figuratively as well. The Broncos have won nine consecutive games after Sunday’s latest come-from-behind win over three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Nuggets have taken seven of their last eight contests. And, of course, the Avalanche are riding a six-game streak. Unlike the Broncos, the Avalanche have had to knock off several opponents on lengthy heaters of their own, including the New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, and most recently, the New York Islanders.
Even if you’re strictly a hockey fan in Denver and football isn’t exactly your Sunday ritual, there’s still reason to appreciate what the Broncos’ surge means for the organization and the city at large—particularly when Jared Bednar himself is offering them the respect they’ve earned.
“I like it. I like it a lot. I’m a big fan of the local teams, so it’s really nice to see the Nuggets get out to a good start. Obviously, the Broncos, that’s huge, I think, for the city," Bednar said at Monday's optional practice. "You know, this is a big football town. They’ve been kind of building it over the last few years, and this year, it seems like they have something special going here, so I’m excited to see them going into the playoffs.”
Now that the sports season is about through the whole warmup phase, let's put a crazy thought into existence. What if the Avalanche, the Broncos, and the Nuggets all won their respective championships this year? The Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl, and the NBA title? That would be crazy for our city and the world if you think about it.
Think about the revenue the area could generate from tourists who fly to Denver and see a billboard that says, "Welcome to the Sports Capital of the World." Even if you don't follow the other sports or you have a mix and match, that would still be pretty cool to see.
But we'll send our thoughts and prayers to the Rockies.
