Colorado has had recent success but the team may have not yet played its best game.
Colorado is riding a seven-game win streak, the longest for the team this season and currently the longest one in the NHL. While the Avalanche look to keep the momentum going, head coach Jared Bednar said there is another level to his team's game.
"We're going to keep fine tuning, that's what we're going to try and do. We're nitpicking at stuff now in certain games. I didn't love our game in St. Louis. We just didn't manage the puck very well," Bednar said. "We've been going through games without having any turnovers, scoring chances against and we had probably eight in the St. Louis game and two of them they capitalized on so that's a little bit more on us. You got to give St Louis credit for putting the pressure on us, but we just didn't manage the puck very well. But prior to that, we're nitpicking at little things in the games just trying to refine our game in any way we can to make sure we're setting the highest standard we can with our group."
The team has played its best on home ice but the cohesion with four new players was apparent in the last four road wins.
"It was good to have a road trip, you know get guys away from home and get to know some of the guys. For me it felt like I'm on the road anyways, so I was happy and good to get to know some guys," Casey Mittelstadt said. "On the ice, you know I think I'm fitting in pretty well. I think it's obviously a process and some things to learn and some things to get better at but overall pretty happy with how I started."
Mittelstadt has made the scoresheet in four of the five games he has played so far in burgundy and blue. Coming from a different system with the Buffalo Sabres, he said it's a "work in progress" as he continues to improve and adjust to his new team.
"Obviously it's different systems and kind of a different way of playing, so for me it's been a little bit of an adjustment," Mittelstadt said. "Definitely learning new things each game, feeling more comfortable with that. And like I said, it's a little bit a work in progress and keep watching the games after and trying to learn and get better from it."
The Avalanche are home for the next five games, and as they have had more success at Ball Arena, their winning momentum will most likely not die down.
