Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports - MacKinnon, Nichushkin earn 2 points each in Avalanche 3-1 win over Sharks

Valeri Nichushkin and Nathan MacKinnon notched two points each in the Avalanche's 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday night.

    First period

Mikko Rantanen alone had more shots on goal than the San Jose Sharks as a whole with one finding the back of the net at 6:58 on the power play. Nathan MacKinnon and Valeri Nichushkin assisted on his goal.

The Sharks were called for too many men on the ice which created the only power play for the Avs in the period.

MacKinnon put a hit on Mario Ferraro which took him out of the game. The Hockey News' Max Miller confirmed Ferraro would not return to the game with a lower-body injury.

Colorado did not have any penalties in the period and outshot the Sharks 9-4. The period ended with the Avalanche ahead 1-0.

    Second period

The Avs took three penalties in the middle frame but one was a matching penalty after Sharks forward Luke Kunin and Josh Manson got into a scuffle.

Jonathan Drouin was called for hooking at 16:45 which led to a goal from Sharks forward Tomas Hertl seconds into the penalty to tie the game.

San Jose only had six SOG and the Avs tallied 11. The period ended in a one all tie.

    Third period

Valeri Nichushkin scored the only even-strength goal of the game, and it was the game-winner, with three and a half minutes left. Jack Johnson and MacKinnon were awarded assists.

The Sharks didn't have a SOG until 5:24 left in the period — only two total in the final frame.

San Jose was assessed four penalties in the period. Hertl was given a misconduct with less than a minute left.

Cale Makar received the only Avs penalty for tripping Mikael Granlund 16:58 into the final frame.

Manson hit the empty net with just over a minute left to make the final 3-1.

The Avalanche ended the season series with the Sharks undefeated.
