Colorado is looking to regroup back home at Ball Arena against the New Jersey Devils — the first matchup for Miles Wood and Tomas Tatar against their former team since joining the Avalanche

Tuesday's matchup against the New Jersey Devils will be the first time Miles Wood and Tomas Tatar play their previous team since joining the Avalanche.

"I'm excited but at the end of the day, it's just another game that we're trying to win here," Wood said after morning skate. "I guess it's a little special but ... as soon as the puck drops, it's game time."

Wood said it may be a bit odd to face his old team but it would probably only last his first shift.

Tatar said he's excited about reuniting with his former teammates, but it's still down to business when the game starts.

"I'm excited. It's exciting to see all the guys again. Fun to see them on opposite side — obviously you want to play well to kind of stick it to them, but I have a lot of friends on the team," Tatar said. "I had a great two years there. I'm looking forward to challenging them and playing against them."

Wood said head coach Jared Bednar went over video Tuesday morning and that he was "spot on" with the breakdown of New Jersey's play. So he feels the team is prepared to take on the No. 2 Metropolitan Division Devils.

Devils forwards Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier are out with injuries and Avs forward Fredrik Olofsson is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

There's no place like home for the Avalanche

The team is glad to be back home and able to settle down a bit for a weeklong home stand with three games at Ball Arena.

"It's going to be nice to play a few home games. It was a tough schedule for us to travel around — you start to feel a little bit," Tatar said. "We're glad we can have a home stretch and hopefully start on the right note."

Ryan Johansen said he wants the team to continue its home advantage as it has yet to lose a game at Ball Arena this season (the Carolina Hurricanes are the only other undefeated team at home).

"Been a real nice couple of days, nice to be back at Ball and we want to keep building on our home ice advantage and being a real hard team to play against here and have a great bounce-back game," Johansen said.

The Devils won both games against the Avalanche last season, and this is the first of two the teams will play against each other this season.

Opening face off is at 8 p.m. and is a nationally televised game on TNT. The Avs will then face the Seattle Kraken on Thursday and a rematch with the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. It's a busy week for the team, but they don't have to go any farther than a mile high.
