Cale Makar's assist in Tuesday night's 4-1 win over the Seattle Kraken was a historical one — it was his 250th in just 241 games. That broke the previous record for quickest defenseman to hit 250 held by Bobby Orr who did so in 247 games.
The 24-year-old got the puck behind the Avalanche net and banked it off the corner boards to clear it. Logan O'Connor was skating through the neutral zone, grabbed it on his forehand on the breakaway and beat Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer glove side.
Seattle got on the board first with a goal from Kailer Yamamoto with less than five minutes left in the first period. Artturi Lehkonen tied it up at 16:10 in the second and O'Connor's short-handed game-winner came at 8:09 in the second.
"We just knew something was coming and that it was going to break at some point," Makar said after the win.
Mikko Rantanen and Valeri Nichushkin scored the third and fourth goals, respectively, and the Avalanche return home with a 3-0 record before the home opener on Thursday.
Makar notched four points in the first three games, but he was ready to go from the start.
"We want to make sure that we set the tempo high at the beginning of the season," Makar said after the season opening win against the Los Angeles Kings.
The young defenseman, who was drafted fourth overall by the Avalanche in 2017, has earned several accolades thus far in his career — Calder Trophy (2020), Norris Trophy (2022), Conn Smythe Trophy (2022) and of course, the Stanley Cup (2022).
The Avs' win tied the NHL record for the longest regular-season road wins streak spanning seasons at 14. Colorado hasn't lost at an opposing team's rink in the regular season since March 4 against the Dallas Stars.
