With 81 days to go until opening night at Nationwide Arena, there's only one person to talk about - Stanislav Svozil.
Stanislav Svozil, the 22-year-old defenseman from Prerov, CZE, was considered a steal when the Jackets drafted him 69th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.
His first year with the WHL's Regina Pats was a good one. In 59 games, he totaled 41 points in his first season in North America. His second year was even better. Playing alongside future #1 overall pick Connor Bedard, he managed 78 points in 56 games and added 13 points in 7 playoff games. Having been drafted just a year before, many CBJ fans thought that the Blue Jackets stole one.
After his second season at Regina, Svozil decided to go pro. Svozil would report to the Blue Jackets and play the final two games of the NHL season for the CBJ. In those two games, he registered his first NHL point, as assist, and averaged 20:07 in ice time in those two games. Not bad for his first pro action in the States. He then went to Cleveland and played a single game to end their season, where he would tally two assists. Not too shabby.
Since that time, Svozil has played two seasons with the Monsters and done fairly well.
In two seasons, Svozil has played in 110 games and totaled 47 points, which includes 9 goals and 4 game-winning goals.
The 2024-25 season saw Svozil finish second behind Denton Mateychuk for points by a defenseman with 24, which he did in 63 games. Young Mateychuk only played in 27 games before he was called up to the Jackets. No other defenseman had 20 points last season for the Monsters.
Stanislav Svozil will be leaned on heavily for the upcoming season in Cleveland. With a very young blue line, it could get sketchy for the Monsters. They'll have newly acquired veterans Christián Jaroš and Dysin Mayo, who are both in their late 20s, to mentor all of the young guys who are in their early 20s. This season could go either way.
One thing is for certain: it's Stanislav Svozil's time to shine, and he needs to make the most of it, as he will be an RFA after this next season and will need a new deal.
