Pheonix Copley Will Give The Blue Jackets Another Goalie With NHL Experience
Back in July, the Blue Jackets signed Copley to a one-year, $850,000 contract. With this move, Columbus added another veteran goalie to their depth.
With Elvis Merzlikins undergoing shoulder surgery last month and being out indefinitely, Copley could be the Blue Jackets' backup goalie if No. 90 ends up not being ready for the start of the season.
Copley made one appearance at the NHL level last season with the Los Angeles Kings, where he stopped 25 out of 28 shots in a loss. He spent the bulk of the season in the AHL with the Ontario Reign, though, where he posted a 21-11-1 record, a .901 save percentage, and a 2.59 goals-against average.
The most NHL action Copley has seen during his career was in 2022-23 with the Kings, as he had a 24-6-3 record, a 2.64 goals-against average, and a .903 save percentage in 37 games. Since then, he has played in just 10 NHL games over the last three seasons.
It will now be interesting to see how many opportunities Copley gets with the Blue Jackets this season. In 78 career NHL games, he has posted a 44-17-8 record, an .898 save percentage, and a 2.85 goals-against average.
