    CBJ adding another D-man?

    CBJ adding another D-man?

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports - Blue Jackets Called Devils about Damon Severson

Elliotte Friedman gave us some information about a possible CBJ move last Saturday night about Devils Defenseman Damon Severson. Friedman hinted that the Devils might trade Severson’s rights before he’s set to become a UFA on July 1. And apparently, the Blue Jackets came calling about him.

Friedman explained on a podcast “Damon Severson, (he’ll be) a free agent”,  “The Devils made the decision to keep him for the deadline. Look, they wanted to go for the playoffs, they won a round, I think we understand the decision. I think teams have asked ‘if you can’t sign Severson, will you trade us his rights?’ and the answer is not “no.

Wednesday, Friedman, on 32 Thoughts the Podcast, gave an update.

“Columbus here, they’re looking for defense”, “They are out looking hard for defense. For example, one of the things I heard, we mentioned on Saturday night’s show. Teams were calling the Devils seeking permission to either talk to Severson or trade for his rights. I think Columbus was one of those teams thinking about that too.”

But is this still the case? The CBJ just traded for Ivan Provorov and have him under team control for two years, and at a decent cap hit. Severson projects to make close to $6 million for five or more years. Is this something Jarmo is willing to do?

I think the move made by the Blue Jackets to get Provorov kills the idea of signing Damon Severson. Simply put, he makes too much money, and I’m sure the CBJ would like to put that money elsewhere.
