The fun got started early when Mathieu Olivier and Matt Rempe went toe-to-toe. Olivier landed several hard shots and eventually put Rempe to the ice. Olivier went to the box, while Rempe left the ice for repairs. This was a heavyweight bout worth watching again.
Jacob Trouba was penalized for holding Justin Danforth which gave the CBJ their first PP of the game. Dmitri Voronkov(16) scored to make it 1-0, as Kirill Marchenko and Damon Severson assisted. It was a beautiful play from the power play unit.
With 5:38 to go in the first, noted Ranger villain Artemi Panarin scored to tie it at 1. And that's how the first period would end.
Kirill Marchenko(17) scored 18 seconds into the second to make it 2-1, his 17th. Dmitri Voronkov and Yegor Chinakhov assisted on the goal.
Adam Edstrom was credited with a goal 11:11 into the second period to tie it. Three minutes later Jack Roslovic(4) scored to make it 3-2 as Gaudreau and Jenner would get the assists. Jacob Trouba went off for holding Kent Johnson with 5:47 left to give the Jackets their second power play of the night. The Rangers would easily kill it off. Ivan Provorov(5) would make it 4-2 on a beautiful shot as he was bearing down on Quick in the slot. Roslovic and Gaudreau would get the assists. The second period would end 4-2 Jackets.
The third period was filled with back-and-forth action with lots of scoring chances and shots on goal, but it took until the Rangers Ryan Lindgren went to the box for high-sticking giving the CBJ a power play for something to happen. The Rangers pulled Quick with three minutes left for the extra attacker to try to spark a late comeback when Dmitri Voronkov was sent to the box for a faceoff violation which put the Rangers on a power play. Quick would again leave his net for the extra attacker, but the CBJ would shut it down.
Elvis Merzlikins who had been absolutely stellar all night, would stop everything thrown his way. The Rangers would fire 18 shots at Merzlikins in the third period, but he would turn away all shots. The Jackets upset the Rangers 4-2 on a rowdy Sunday night at Nationwide Arena.
