The Blue Jackets have a clear move to make with their big winger.

Back in December, the Columbus Blue Jackets acquired forward Mason Marchment from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick. This was after the big winger struggled to find his fit in Seattle, as he had four goals and nine assists in 29 games.

While Marchment had an underwhelming tenure with the Kraken, he has certainly been a home run of an addition for the Blue Jackets. In 34 games with the Blue Jackets since the trade, he has recorded 14 goals, 14 assists, 28 points, 41 hits, and a plus-17 rating. With numbers like these, Marchment has been a major addition to the Blue Jackets' roster.

With Marchment being such a good fit on the Blue Jackets' roster, the Metropolitan Division club has a clear move to make with him. The Blue Jackets must sign the 6-foot-5 winger to a contract extension instead of letting him hit the market as an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Marchment has simply been too good for the Blue Jackets to let him just walk during the offseason. This is especially so when noting that this year's free agency is not going to have too many better options to replace him if he leaves.

It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jackets end up extending him, but it is clear that they made the right call trading for him earlier this season.
