The Blue Jackets should be working quickly to keep Mason Marchment in Columbus.

Back in December, the Columbus Blue Jackets acquired forward Mason Marchment from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick. The move was understandable, as the Blue Jackets' forward group needed a boost.

In the end, the Blue Jackets certainly got good value from Marchment following the trade. In 39 games with the Blue Jackets after the trade, the 6-foot-5 forward recorded 15 goals, 17 assists, 32 points, and a plus-21 rating. This was after he had four goals and 13 points in 29 games with Seattle before the trade.

Clearly, getting a fresh start with the Blue Jackets benefited Marchment immensely. He became a key part of the Blue Jackets' roster and put up some very strong offensive totals in the process. Now, the big winger is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) and due for his next deal.

With how marvelously Marchment fit into the Blue Jackets' system, it is clear that they should be working hard to sign him to contract extension before July 1. He was such a great fit on the Blue Jackets' roster, and it would be excellent if they got him signed to a multi-year extension because of it.

It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jackets and Marchment can come to terms on a new deal before the start of free agency. If he ends up signing elsewhere, he would not be an easy player for the Blue Jackets to replace.
