The Columbus Blue Jackets have a big decision on their hands. Their captain, Boone Jenner, is entering the last year of his contract and can sign an extension as soon as possible.
Jenner, 32, missed the majority of the 2024-25 season due to injury. However, when he returned to the ice, he made an impact right away. In 26 games, he had seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points. Unfortunately, he and the Blue Jackets just fell short of making the playoffs.
If we look back at the 2023-24 season, he had 22 goals and 13 assists for 35 points in 58 games. His career-high came in 2015-16 when he scored 49 points in 82 games.
Jenner's contract pays him an average annual value (AAV) of $3.75 million, which is significantly lower than what he should be making. Not necessarily based on pure point production, but more for what he brings to the team on and off the ice. If and when he does sign, the Blue Jackets and Jenner will likely settle somewhere around the $5 million range, which would take him through to the end of his NHL career.
He is going to go down as one of the most liked players in Blue Jackets history, as well as one of the best. It is important for the organization to find a way to get a deal done with him and keep him within the organization for years to come.
