When news came down about Columbus firing Jarmo Kekäläinen, the focus of media and fans immediately turned to who would replace him.
Two hours later, President of Hockey Ops John Davidson held a news conference to announce the firing of Kekäläinen and to answer questions. One of the questions was if they had any idea of who they wanted as GM, the short answer was no. But Davidson did say that they would focus their search outside the organization and already had a few calls concerning the position.
TSN's Darren Dreger almost immediately asked whether or not the Montreal Canadiens would allow the CBJ to talk to Canadiens Vice President of Hockey Operations Jeff Gorton.
Jeff Gorton has a history with John Davidson as he was the New York Rangers General Manager when John Davidson was in New York from 2019 to 2021. Both were fired on May 5, 2021. Later in 2021, Jeff Gorton was hired by Montreal as Vice President of Hockey Operations, where he still serves today.
Could they be reunited?

Other Important Moves As An Executive
As far as Columbus GM Targets, I would imagine Gorton would probably be number 1 on their list. Between his history with John Davidson and his experience, this would be perfect for both parties. The cupboard is stocked and ready to go for whoever takes the job. However, would the Montreal Canadiens even grant permission for the Blue Jackets to talk to him? That's the biggest question.
This seems like the best match for the Blue Jackets. Neither the Jackets nor the Canadiens are going to make the playoffs, so NHL fans may know in just a few short months. Gorton also has executive experience, which is something to think about down the line should the Jackets need to fill an executive role.
