Columbus has announced that defenseman David Jiříček has been recalled and will join the team on their road trip. The Blue Jackets play the Colorado Avalanche tomorrow at 9 p.m.
The call-up comes after Zach Werenski blocked a shot against the Detroit Red Wings late in the game that had Werenski in pain. He didn't practice on Thursday, but it's unclear if that was precautionary or because he physically couldn't.
Jiříček has played in 24 games this season for the Cleveland Monsters and has a stat line of 7-10-17. He's averaging .70 ppg this season, compared to .69 ppg in 55 games last season for the Monsters.
The young defenseman has 40 NHL games under his belt through two seasons. In those 40 games, he has 1 goal and 9 assists.
David Jiříček has been the topic of conversation a lot this season. Many fans and media think he should be in the NHL full-time, while others think he is right where he should be, in the AHL. A lot of scouts and experts have pointed out that although he is a prized prospect, he still has a lot to work on at 20 years old.
Getting more minutes, and playing in the AHL playoffs should help young Jiříček.
What's Next - The Jackets will face the Avalanche on Friday in Colorado.
