The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled forward Mikael Pyyhtiä from the Cleveland Monsters today. This is ahead of their huge game tomorrow at Ohio Stadium against the Detroit Red Wings.
Cole Sillinger was lost to an upper-body injury on Thursday night against Detroit. After the game, HC Dean Evason said his status was unknown, and it wasn't clear if he'd be available to play on Saturday. Sillinger took an innocent-looking hit from Mo Seider, got up, and continued the play. He came back out for another shift but then left for the locker room and didn't return. Blue Jackets PR put out a post on X stating he wouldn't return.
Pyyhtiä has played 46 games with Columbus already this season, scoring 4 goals and totaling 7 points while averaging 12:06 of ice time.
For Cleveland, Pyyhtiä has played in 10 games and has 6 points.
Losing Sillinger for any extended period would be a big blow for a team trying to win as many games as they can to get into the playoffs. Sillinger is having a career season, having already beaten his career high with 20 assists, and needs just 4 points to beat his career mark of 32.
Boone Jenner moved back to the center position with Sillinger leaving the game, so Evason had an easy decision to make in replacing Sillinger at 2C.
Calling up Pyyhtiä was the easiest decision for GM Don Waddell, as well.
