First Period
Former Jacket Anthony Duclair got the scoring started early when he took a turnover and drove down the ice. As he was stick handling it looked as though he muffed the puck and accidentally put it through the five-hole of Elvis Merzlikins. Either way, it counts and the Sharks went up 1-0. Fabian Zetterlund tripped Boone Jenner to give the Jackets a power play, but just under a minute into the power play, it was nullified when Ivan Provorov tripped Mario Ferraro. Johnny Gaudreau had two breakaways on the Sharks power play but lost the puck on one and hit the post on another. With 4:44 left in the first, Zach Werenski scored his 2nd goal of the season, finally breaking through on Sharks goalie Kahkonen. Kirill Marchenko made it 2-1 CBJ with 3:36 left, his 16th goal of the season. With 2:50 left in the first, the Jackets were given a power play when Ryan Carpenter hooked Johnny Gaudreau, which was easily killed by the Sharks. The period would end 2-1 Jackets.
Second Period
Johnny Gaudreau scored his 8th goal of the season 1:18 into the second period. But upon further review, it was deemed to be offsides, so the goal wouldn't count. The Jackets penalty kill unit got a chance to stop a Sharks power play and they did just that. Dmitri Vorokov scored his 14th goal of the season with 12:46 left in the second to make it 3-1. Anthony Duclair absolutely smoked the Jackets defense for his second goal of the game to make it 3-2 with 12:28 left. Dmitri Voronkov was called for tripping on a play where he didn't seem to touch Nikita Okhotiuk. The Sharks quickly scored to make it 3-3 on a goal by Fabian Zetterlund And that's how the period would end.
Third Period
With 16:48 left in the first, the Jackets would go to the power play but that penalty would again be easily killed by the Sharks. Through 10 minutes neither team had scored to that point, but both teams had a few chances. Cole Sillinger was sent to the box for tripping with 7:40 left in the game which put the Jackets in a crucial PK situation late in the game. They would kill it and move on. With 12.9 seconds to go, Boone Jenner beats the San Jose goaltender Kahkonen to put the Jackets up 4-3. The Jackets won a wild game 4-3 in San Jose to secure their 10th win all-time in The Shark Tank.
Per NHL PR, The Boone Jenner game-winner was the second-latest go-ahead goal in CBJ history, behind only Patrik Laine's goal against the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 12th, 2022.
