The Blue Jackets just hit a buzzer beater.
The team announced today that they have signed forward Kirill Marchenko to a three-year contract today. The contract will run through the 26-27 season and will carry an AAV of $3.85 million per season.
In a statement GM Don Waddell says, “Kirill Marchenko has been an important player for the Blue Jackets during his first two NHL seasons and reaching an agreement to keep him in Columbus was important to us.” He went on to say “He has size, skill and the ability to score goals and will continue to be a big part of our core group moving forward.”
Marchenko and the team got this deal done just in time as he was scheduled to go to an arbitration hearing on July 31. Neither side wanted to go to that hearing.
This is a great deal for both parties. It gives the team some flexibility in terms of the cap, and gives Marchenko a chance to earn big money in a few years if he continues the pace he's on.
Marchenko has played in 137 career games for Columbus, scoring 44 goals and totaling 67 points. He broke the rookie goal scoring record, and followed that up with another 20 goal season. He's the only Jacket to score 20 goals in his first two years in the NHL.
