Late Saturday night, Rick Dhaliwal of The Athletic reported that the Columbus Blue Jackets will sign goalie Zach Sawchenko to a one-year deal.
Sawchenko has played mostly in the AHL for the San Jose Barracuda, Chicago Wolves, and the Abbotsford Canucks. He has an AHL record of 32-36-5 and an ECHL record of 13-4-3. He hasn't played in the ECHL since 2021.
The Blue Jackets reported signing of Sawchenko would add goalie depth to the organization, but many wonder where he will play. The Jackets have Elvis Merzļikins and Daniil Tarasov at the NHL level, but also RFA Jet Greaves and Pavel Čajan at the AHL level.
Čajan recently signed an AHL deal and it's assumed he and Greaves will be the goalie tandem for the Monsters. In the last two seasons, he has also been loaned to the ECHL and played in 14 games. Greaves meanwhile, is awaiting a new contract.
Does the signing of Sawchenko mean something else is coming in terms of another move? Or would the Monsters run with three goalies?
Jet Greaves is seemingly NHL-ready and has already proved to be too good for the AHL. You can never have too much depth, especially at the goalie position, so maybe this is just that, depth.
What is Don Waddell cooking up?
