Marchment and the Stars rally to beat the Blue Jackets

When the game was supposed to start, the lights wouldn't come back on, so they had a delayed start. Not a good start to the night.

1st Period

1:08 into the game, the Jackets broke away on a 3 on 2, carried in by Jack Roslovic. He slung the puck towards the center in front of Oettinger which made it through to Johnny Gaudreau on the left side, who tried to pass it back to Boone Jenner in front of Oettinger. The puck ended up at the feet of Jenner and two Stars defenders and then into the net. Jackets took a 1-0 lead.

Mathieu Olivier had a 1-on-1 with Oettinger after a turnover in the Stars defensive zone but couldn't bury it. A prime chance.

A few minutes later, Adam Fantilli took a pass from Dmitri Voronkov and slid it past Oettinger, it didn't make it in however, as it hit the left post and came back out. The Jackets have had a few very good chances early in this game.

At 11:17, Kirill Marchenko took a beautiful pass from Adam Fantilli who beat a sprawling Oettinger on a 2-on-1. The goal was assisted by Fantilli and Dmitri Voronkov. 2-0 Jackets.

Just 45 seconds later, the Stars beat Martin to make it 2-1. The goal was scored by Mason Marchment and was assisted by Duchene and Seguin.

With 6:32 left in the period, the CBJ gave the Stars their first powerplay when Erik Gudbranson got called for cross-checking. The Jackets killed it off.

The Jackets gave the Stars another powerplay with 3:01 left when Dmitri Voronkov went to the box for holding. The Jackets stout PK killed it off.

2nd Period

The second started with referee Furman South taking a high stick off the faceoff up high, he had some repairs and is fine it seems.

3:43 into the period, the Stars and CBJ both send a guy to the box, which resulted in a 2-minute 4-on-4. Thomas Harley and Adam Fantilli sat for two minutes. Neither team would score on the 4-on-4.

Texier and Sillinger had a breakaway that Texier couldn't hit the net on. Oettinger got some luck on that one. The Jackets are carrying play right now.

Spencer Martin gave up a juicy rebound on a Radek Faksa shot that was buried by Craig Smith to make it 2-2.

Dmitri Voronkov was tripped by the Stars Oettinger that gave the CBJ their first PP of the game. The power play was promptly killed off by the Stars.

Jake Bean was trying to move the puck into the offensive zone when he turned it over. The puck ended up sailing down the ice toward Spencer Martin. It was corralled by the Stars Matt Duchene, who sent in a shot that looked to be saved, but it leaked through Martin and in. 3-2 Stars.

3rd Period

The Jackets started the third down 3-2 but had a few chances early on.

3:47 into the third, however, the Stars scored on Spencer Martin. A shot was let go from just inside the blue line that was knocked down and snuck past Martin. Tyler Seguin was credited with the goal.

This game is almost mirroring the October 30th game exactly.

Halfway through the third and it's all Stars. The Jackets have had a few chances but nothing solid. The Stars are simply outclassing Columbus at this point.

The Jackets pulled Martin with 4:41 left for the extra attacker down two goals. They survived a minute and a half and then had to put him back in for a faceoff.

With 2:56 left, there was a loose puck down in the Stars defensive end that was collected by Jason Robertson and sent 180 feet the other way that trickled in for a goal to make it 5-2 Stars.

Reactions

  • The CBJ PK was perfect on 1 attempt.
  • Spencer Martin looked good at the beginning of the game, but once the Stars scored a few he seemed to waiver. The Duchene goal on the breakaway he had at first and it just leaked through.
  • The Marchenko-Fantilli-Voronkov line continues to better and better. They were a plus-2 and had 3 points on the night.
  • Boone Jenner scored his team-leading 6th goal and continues to lead by example.

The Jackets move on to Detroit on Saturday and will get a chance at revenge for a loss earlier in the season.
