Elvis Merzļikins admitted on exit interview day that his season ended due to a concussion, but now, he's cleared up how it happened.
Merzļikins appeared on a Latvian YouTube/Podcast called OlyBet Latvia, where he talked about what happened. The following statement was translated from Latvian.
"What happened was unusual. At least for me, it's never happened to me. We had two games against Ottawa. In one game in Ottawa, where I wasn't supposed to play, I entered the game. In the second period, I got hit in the head twice, and I got hit in the jaw once. As a goalie, you know, you get hit in the head. Yes, your ears are ringing a little, but that's all. But here it is, I kind of felt it when it hit me. And then, we had the next game again against Ottawa at home, and there, I got hit five times in the head. Then the last, fifth time, when it hit me right in the middle, I realized something was wrong. When you get a concussion, you feel like something is wrong. There were three minutes left in the game, and I just wanted to play. I played the game, I understood what the situation was, that we had to win all the last games. I went to practice the next morning and tried, I think, to do it through the pain. I tried, well, you just don't feel it, especially that reaction when that puck flies at you. Well, you feel nauseous, those players will start skating fast, and that white light, that's not a muscle you can push through, through the pain. If you don't take care of the concussion properly, you'll have serious headaches and problems in the future when you're old, you know. It's important to me that I'm good in my old age, that I'm not bad, you know. I also felt really tense, because when you want to fight with your team to reach those playoffs, or get that good result. But unfortunately, I couldn't do it, and so I decided not to play."
Elvis also states that he would like to finish his career playing in Switzerland. He also reveals that he and his wife bought a house in Switzerland last summer, and plan to live there in the future. He was also asked how many more years he could play in the NHL, but never answered.

The Ottawa game he started, the CBJ got the win, which kick-started a season-ending six-game win streak, would be the last game Elvis would play in. He finished the season with a 26-21-5 record with a SV% of .892, and 1 shutout.
