The 2023-24 season did not start how the team or fans expected it to. No, this team was not a playoff team, but no one expected the team to get off to the start they have thus far.
Let's take a look at the stats through 19 games.
Goals For - 51 - 23rd in the NHL
Goals Against - 69 - 29th in the NHL
Power Play - 9.8% - 30th in the NHL. Somehow Washington is much worse.
Penalty Kill - 87.3% - 4th in the NHL. One of the only bright spots on the team.
PIMs - 154 - 8th in the NHL. They are fairly disciplined despite everything that's going on.
Shots per Game - 30.8 - 19th in the NHL
Shots Against - 32.7 - 28th in the NHL
Faceoff Win % - 47.3% - 25th in the NHL
The Jackets have been involved in 10 games that were one-goal games. There's no doubt in anyone's mind that with a few bounces here and there, and one less mistake per game, the Jackets could have at least 10 more points. They also have been in some very competitive games. I know fans don't like to hear what-ifs, but the fact of the matter is, they haven't been terrible in every game.
The Blue Jackets have 63 games left, and plenty of time to dig their way out of this hole, but they have to start asap.
