Islanders Squeak Past An Undermanned And Outgunned Columbus Team, Jackets Also Lose Tarasov & Bean To Injury

Dmitri Voronkov(18) and Kirill Marchenko(21) provided the offense, and the tandem of Daniil Tarasov and Jet Greaves would make 37 saves, but it would not be enough on this night to beat the barely clinging-to-life New York Islanders.

Everyone was expecting this game to be boring, but the first period was anything but that. Both teams scored a power-play goal and an even-strength goal in the first to make it entertaining, including this goal below from Kirill Marchenko. Are you kidding me??

The story of the first was the loss of Columbus goalie Daniil Tarasov. Tarasov took a David Jiricek hip or knee to the head and neck area that put Tarasov down for a few moments. He was helped up and escorted to the locker room. Jet Greaves would take over the rest of the game.

The second period was a lot less eventful. The Islanders outshot the Jackets 14-6 in the period, but Jet Greaves held New York without a goal. Greaves did make a few big saves as well to keep them off the board.

Noah Dobson would score to make it 3-2 early in the third, and that would hold until the Jackets would pull Jet Greaves for the extra man with just over three minutes left in the game. The CBJ would fail to convert and the Isles would get an empty netter to seal the game for New York. The Jackets would fall 4-2.

Jet Greaves came in and played remarkably well in relief, stopping 24 of 25 Islanders shot.

Injury News

  • Goalie Daniil Taraov left just before the end of the first period after colliding with defenseman David Jiricek. It looked as though he caught a knee or hip to the head and neck area. He was slow to get up and had to be helped off. HC Pascal Vincent had no update after the game.
  • Defenseman Jake Bean blocked a shot late in the game that looked to injure him. He got up gingerly, finished his shift, and left the game. Vincent said after the game that Bean was going to miss some time.
