The first period didn't start well for the CBJ. Four minutes in, Pierre Engvall took a pass from Noah Dobson to put the Isles up 1-0. The goal came on a terrible giveaway by the Jackets Andrew Peeke. It took the Jackets about 8 or 9 minutes to get themselves organized and get some decent puck possession. Bo Horvat took a hooking penalty at 12:07 to give the CBJ their first power-play. The Islanders would kill it with no issues and the first period would end in a 1-0 score.
Boone Jenner had a clear breakaway on Varlamov 3:15 into the second but got stoned by Varlamov. Emil Bemstrom tied the game at one when he took a puck off the boards and put it into a wide-open net. It's the first goal the Jackets have scored on the Islanders this season. Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson would get the assists. Just over 10 minutes into the second, Adam Fantilli ripped a one-timer past Varlamov to give the Jackets the lead at 2-1. Fantilli took a pass from Kent Johnson via Zach Werenski and left no doubt. The play started with a between-the-legs pass from Fantilli to Bemstrom, who then dumped it to Werenski and then to Johnson, who passed it to Fantilli for the finish. Cal Clutterbuck would tie the game when he was left all alone with Spencer Martin. The Isles would take the lead at 3-2 when Matt Barzal took a deflected puck off of a skate and buried it into Spencer Martin's net. Just a minute later, the Islanders scored again on the power play to make it 4-2. The wheels had officially fallen off of this game for the CBJ.
Adam Fantilli would score his second of the night just 1:27 into the third to make it 4-3. The goal was assisted by Emil Bemstrom and Jake Bean. Boone Jenner swiped the puck away from Spencer Martin after he had it saved. The puck went straight to a waiting Barzal who put it into an empty net to make it 5-3. That was a very un-Boone Jenner-like play. Bo Horvat made it 6-3 when he put in a shot on Martin, who made the save, but gave up a rebound. Horvat circled the net and put it in the open net. Just 20 seconds later, Horvat scored again to make it 7-3 Isles. That would pretty much seal it. The game would end 7-3 in favor of the Isles.
