According to DailyFaceoff.com's Frank Seravalli, Jake Bean is "In danger of not receiving a qualifying offer" from new GM Don Waddell.
Bean is a restricted free agent on July 1st with his 3-year, $7 million contract expiring. Bean's qualifying offer, per PuckPedia, would need to be $2.8 million. Per Seravalli, Bean's QO is "more than the going rate for a third-pair defenseman." He mentions the logjam that the Jackets have with young defensemen as well.
With players like David Jiricek, Denton Mateychuk, Stanislav Svozil, and Corson Cuelemans all in waiting, signing Bean would most definitely be an issue. Those young kids are close to making a push, and hindering development is something that was a hot topic throughout last season.
Jake Bean has yet to play a full NHL season, being hampered year after year with injuries. Bean, when healthy, is an offensive threat. But the keywords are when healthy. And let's not forget who traded him from Carolina to Columbus in the first place, Don Waddell.
Waddell has said that he wants his kids to get as much AHL experience as possible, so this could be a saving grace for Bean. Unless they just flat-out choose to not qualify him under any circumstances.
Seravalli says that "the writing appears to be on the wall."
Is this the end of Jake Bean's tenure in Columbus?
