John Davidson Addresses Trade Deadline On Radio Appearance
Davidson was asked what he anticipates at the trade deadline for his Columbus Blue Jackets. He answered by saying "Teams around the league have already started with the calls. We've had a lot of calls over the last few days. People want to get my idea of what we would like to do. At this point and time, there's a lot of tire-kicking going on." He goes on to say, "It's a situation here where we have to take a hard look at this. Do we free up cap space for the offseason so we can maybe do something for our club? Do we have an expiring contract where, you know where we are in the standings, let's try to get an asset while we can. We're working our way through this. There could be a player we have that four teams are calling on, so that makes you feel good about it. We're in a good spot, but nothing solid right now."
Davidson was asked by host Anthony Rothman if the Blue Jackets would be active at the deadline, Davidson says, "I don't think you'll see anything major. One of the main reasons for that is, we're going to have a new general manager. That person has to be in the chair and not look and say what the hell did you guys do that for?" Davidson says they're looking at all candidates, including women. He goes on to say that accumulating picks is not a bad thing and that they can be used as currency. Many fans complain about always getting picks, and not players in return.
"I don't think they'll be anything major, but who knows?"
One could say that Davidson could be tipping his hand either way during this interview. People who follow the team have wondered if Davidson or someone else would be handling the trade deadline since he doesn't have much GM experience.
March 8th should be very interesting.
