On April 3, 2013, the Columbus Blue Jackets made a bold move, acquiring star winger Marian Gaborik from the New York Rangers.
In exchange, the Rangers received forwards Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett, defenseman John Moore, and a sixth-round draft pick. At the time, the deal was seen as a statement by the Blue Jackets, unfortunately, it didn't turn out the that way.
The Blue Jackets were very excited for Gaborik's arrival in Columbus as a proven scorer with three 40-goal seasons under his belt.
The club hoped his offensive skills would bolster a team that had struggled to generate goals. Initially, Gaborik made an impact, recording eight points in 12 games and helping Columbus push for a playoff spot, sadly they didn't end up making it.
Gaborik’s time was limited due to injuries during his time with the Blue Jackets. He played just 34 games over two seasons, scoring 22 points.
By March 2014, Columbus moved on, trading Gaborik to the Los Angeles Kings, where he helped the Kings win a Stanley Cup.
As for the Rangers, they benefited a ton from this trade. Brassard became a key player for New York, tallying 69 points during their run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014. Dorsett brought grit to the lineup, while Moore provided depth on the blue line.
This trade was ultimately won by the Rangers, they got the better valuer out of the players they received. In terms of Columbus, they lost the trade, in what could be one of their worst trades in franchise history.
