Alex Ovechkin is having yet another amazing season for the Washington Capitals, but what else is new?
Through 41 games played, he has 29 goals and 46 points. In his most recent game against the Edmonton Oilers, the 39-year-old recorded his 32nd career hat trick. He’s 5th on that particular list, 18 hat tricks behind Wayne Gretzky.
He now needs just 13 goals to pass Gretzky for the all-time mark.
His journey to 895 started on October 5th, 2005 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. At 7:21 into the first period, Ovi scored on CBJ goalie Pascal Leclaire, igniting an all-time career.
So, what other Columbus Goalies has he scored on? Let’s take a look.
In the 48 games that Alex Ovechkin has played against the Blue Jackets, he has a stat line of 25-14-39, 16 pp points, a minus-12, and has 9 total game-winning goals. If you compare his stats against the Jackets to other teams, he actually has the lowest ppg total against the CBJ than any other current Metro team at .81. All other teams, he's right around 1.0 ppg. His -12 is also the worst among any Metro team for his career. Don't forget though, he's played 25 fewer games against the Blue Jackets than the nearest team on the list, the Rangers. That's at least something positive when it comes to his play against Columbus.
Watching Alex Ovechkin has been a pleasure for the last 20 years, and we are truly watching an all-time player.
It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when, he breaks it. He’s on pace to break the record in the final week of the season. The Blue Jackets play the Capitals on Apr. 12th and 13th in a home-and-home situation, so there’s a very good chance he breaks the record against Columbus. Get your tickets for Apr. 12th at Nationwide Arena just in case, because it could be a record-breaking event.
