The Columbus Blue Jackets have been riddled with injuries as of late. With Kirill Marchenko the latest player to hit the shelf, the Blue Jackets may need to look externally to fill the void.
Yesterday, I looked at a few external options they could acquire, like Ryan Strome of the Anaheim Ducks and Scott Laughton of the Philadelphia Flyers.
If Columbus were to target a more elite-level player, they should look at Buffalo Sabres forward Dylan Cozens.
Cozens, 23, has been an up-and-coming star for the Sabres since his arrival in the NHL. Unfortunately, with how their team is performing, they may need to make a few big changes to shake up their roster.
Cozens' name has come up in trade rumors this season, and he could be a great addition to the Blue Jackets.
The best thing about adding him to their lineup would be his age. He is young and would instantly be part of their core for years to come. He and Kent Johnson could fit well on a line and make up two-thirds of a very strong offensive unit for the Blue Jackets.
In 52 games this season, he has scored 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points. Last season, he recorded 46 points, and the year prior, he had 68.
He also brings a bit of an edge that could be useful if the Blue Jackets are able to punch their ticket to the playoffs this season.
In terms of asking price, the Sabres may be looking for a roster player as part of the return. However, they may be willing to prioritize draft capital and prospects to kickstart their rebuild.
