Cleveland Monsters fans were shocked when it was announced that goalie Jet Greaves wouldn't be playing on Wednesday night just moments before the game. Malcolm Subban was given the start with Pavel Cajan backing him up. But if there's anyone who can handle a closeout game, It's Subban. Subban has won 89 games in his AHL career.
Jake Gaudet(2), Stefan Matteau(1), Alex Whelan(2), Josh Dunne(3), Luca Del Bel Belluz(1), and Roman Ahcan(1) all scored for the Monsters, and Malcolm Subban stopped 25 Syracuse shots in the series ending win.
The Monsters scored four goals in the third period to seal the sweep for Cleveland. After two periods the Crunch were up 3-2, but the Monsters would score three times in a span of two and a half minutes late in the third period to ruin any chance Syracuse had at a comeback.
Malcolm Subban made some big stops in this game. Although he gave up four goals, it was mainly because Syracuse's back was up against the wall, down 2-0 in the series. But Subban held serve and helped the Monsters advance.
The Monsters will now play the Hershey Bears in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals. Hershey will have home ice, and the Monsters will need to play their best hockey to beat a team that won 53 regular season games.
