What's Next For Columbus After Adding James van Riemsdyk?

On Sunday afternoon, the Blue Jackets announced the signing of Left Wing James van Riemsdyk to a one-year contract worth $900k.

Van Riemsdyk brings over 1000 games of experience and 629 points to a young locker room. Not only is the locker room young, but it's also very fragile. Having suffered the tragedy of losing Johnny Gaudreau, this team is going to need some veteran guidance. Even if all JvR brings is a calming, veteran presence, that could help this young roster navigate a difficult year.

Don Waddell said of van Riemsdyk, “James van Riemsdyk has been a very consistent, productive player throughout his career, and bringing him to Columbus will not only provide depth to our group up front, but also valuable leadership and another veteran presence in our dressing room.”

So what's next after the signing of James van Riemsdyk? Waddell said he still wants to sign another forward to round out the roster.

If he goes the UFA route, there are still a bunch of veteran players available. Here are some that could fit with the Jackets if he's looking for someone who is around the same age as JvR.

There are also a lot of younger players out there as well. Names like Boris Katchouk, Kailer Yamamoto, and Logan Brown are still available. Does he go the younger route?

With a ton of cap space and assets, will this be the time when Waddell goes out and swings a trade to bring in a dynamic player? He said he's not worried about the cap floor and has already spoken to the league about their situation, so does this mean he holds on to the money and swings big in the summer of 2025?

This upcoming season is quickly approaching and there are still many questions that need answered.
