Reports are out that Werenski will only accept a trade to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Columbus Blue Jackets relationship with Zach Werenski is essentially over. It has become toxic after it was reported last night that he declined a trade to the Dallas Stars that would've landed the CBJ Thomas Harley.
So now what? Apparently, he wants to remain in the East, with Tampa being his preferred destination. But there are 14 other teams in the East, so who else would he go to?
Let's take a look at a trade between the CBJ and Lightning.
Erik Černák - RD - 29 Years Old
Erik Černák is signed to an 8-year, $41,600,000 contract with a cap hit of $5,200,000 per season, which runs through 2031. He has a full NMC clause for next year, then becomes modified through the end of his deal.
Černák has totaled 120 points in 502 games for the Bolts. He's a prototypical shutdown, defensive defenseman known for his massive 6'4", 230-pound frame, punishing physical play, and shot-blocking ability.
Conor Geekie - F - 22 Years Old
Conor Geekie is signed to a 3 year, $2,659,998 contract with a cap hit of $886,666 per season and has one year left on his ELC.
Geekie is a highly skilled, playmaking center with elite size (6'4", 212 lbs) and an aggressive 200-foot game. He projects to be a power forward and a potential top-six center.
J.J. Moser - LD - 26 Years Old
Moser is signed to a 8 year, $54,000,000 contract with a cap hit of $6,750,000 per season, which runs through 2034. He has no trade protection next season, then a full NMC for two years, and then it's modified for the final five years of the deal.
Moser tied his career high with 7 goals and totaled 29 points last season.
2028 First Round Pick
Tampa Bay is always in win-now mode, and could care less about first round picks, so landing a Norris winner is worth the loss of draft assets in our opinion.
With the news that Werenski rejected a trade to Cup hopeful Dallas, this really puts a Don Waddell in bind. He needs to maximize a return for him, and Dallas was the best shot at "replacing" him. Thomas Harley was the guy to do that.
Tampa has a few pieces to offer, but not much.
