Revisiting the trade that sent Oliver Bjorkstrand to the Seattle Kraken

Revisiting the trade that sent Oliver Bjorkstrand to the Seattle Kraken

The Oliver Bjorkstrand trade is a deal worth revisiting, especially as we look back at its impact on both teams.

The Columbus Blue Jackets sent Bjorkstrand to the Seattle Kraken in the summer of 2022 in exchange for third- and fourth-round picks in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The third-round pick was flipped to the New Jersey Devils in the Damon Severson trade. It was then flipped to the Calgary Flames for Tyler Toffoli. The Flames used the pick to select Aydar Suniev.

The fourth pick was used by the Blue Jackets. They drafted Luca Pinelli, who has looked to be a steal for a fourth-round pick.

At the time, it was seen as a cap-clearing move for Columbus, who had just signed the late Johnny Gaudreau to a massive deal. They had also signed Patrik Laine, and needed to clear cap space. As a result, Bjorkstrand was the cap-causality.

For the Kraken, this was a no-brainer. Bjorkstrand brought versatility, scoring depth, and experience to a team building its identity.

In his first season with Seattle, he played a key role in helping the team reach the playoffs for the first time, contributing 20 goals and 45 points. His two-way game and ability to step up in clutch moments made him a valuable addition.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets return—they were able to bring in a mainstay on their blue line for years to come. As well as a potential top-six forward with the fourth-round pick.

Looking back, this trade should be looked at as a tie or draw. It has proven to help both organizations. Yes, losing Bjorkstrand has hurt the Blue Jackets and their inability to score at times. However, they are building towards being one of the best young teams in the NHL.
