The Dallas Stars lost to the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in overtime on Saturday afternoon after losing a defenseman to injury for the second straight game.

Evan Bouchard scored two goals including the overtime winner on the power play to seal the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 victory Saturday at the American Airlines Center.
It was a tale of two games, as both the first and third periods were scoreless and the second period featured a six goal outburst.
In the first period, the best chance came off the stick of Connor McDavid, who got Oettinger to sprawl out but put a backhand off the post. McDavid was held goalless and now only has three goals in his last 11 games against Dallas.
The Stars had almost a full power play to start the second period, and the second unit cashed in to make it 1-0 when Wyatt Johnson's shot rebounded right to Mason Marchment who made no mistake. Marchmen's goal extended his point streak to nine games, tied for highest among active streaks in the NHL with Nikita Kucherov and Nick Suzuki.
Soon after, Evan Bouchard scored his first of the night on a give-and-go with Mattias Ekholm to tie it 1-1, but Dallas responded with a defenseman goal of their own from Thomas Harley to give the Stars their second lead of the game. Harley took a cross-ice feed from Matt Duchene and shot it just through the pads of Calvin Pickard.
The action continued minutes later when McDavid found former Dallas Stars forward Corey Perry right where he always is, in front of the net, for a tip-in to tie it again. The Stars then faced a 5-on-3 penalty kill for almost a full two minutes, and aside from one post hit by Leon Draisaitl, killed it perfectly and got the matinee crowd on their feet.
Dallas looked poised to continue building momentum and potentially take the lead with a late power play for the final two minutes of the period, but an errant Jamie Benn pass from behind the net sent Edmonton the other way shorthanded, where Derek Ryan cashed in on a beautiful 2-on-1 pass from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
The second power play unit came out and got their second power play goal of the night to wash out the shorthanded goal from the same power play. Duchene stuck with a loose puck near the side of the net and put it past Pickard in the final minute of the second period.
After that, it actually seemed like the third period was a way to getting a point for each team, as the shots were only 6-5 in favor of Edmonton and there was not much major action to speak of. Dallas played the entire third without Jani Hakanpaa because of injury.
In overtime, Wyatt Johnston was called for hooking Draisaitl 23 seconds in, and Evan Bouchard scored his second of the game on the resulting power play to take the extra point.
Here are three takeaways from the game.
Hakanpaa missed the entire third period and overtime with an upper body injury, with no update or timetable given after the game. While the big defenseman has had some struggles at times throughout the season, he and Esa Lindell are the main figures on the power play and a big third pairing that head coach Pete DeBoer relies on to play heavy defensive minutes. Hakanpaa was also the only remaining healthy right shot defenseman after Nils Lundkvist left Thursday's game in Nashville after a hit to the head.
If Hakanpaa and Lundkvist are both out for the next game, let alone multiple games, Dallas will have to do something it has not done all season - rely on a call-up from the AHL to play in an NHL game. The only players to slot in for injury or a healthy scratch have been Joel Hanley and Ty Dellandrea. No injury concerns have forced the Stars hand yet, but that might be over.
Derrick Pouliot was a late scratch for Saturday's Texas Stars game, signifying an impending call-up to the NHL. Pouliot is a left-handed shot who played eight games with the San Jose Sharks last season and has been in the league off-and-on since 2014-15. He is a former #8 overall pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has 8 goals and 23 assists and a plus-6 rating this season in Texas.
Both Logan Stankoven and Mavrik Borque continue to put up points, but with Dellandrea looking quite useful slotting in for the injured Evgenii Dadonov, the two star AHL forwards will most likely not follow Pouliot up to the NHL for the Stars upcoming road trip.
With a game at noon in Boston on Monday, Pouliot will likely slot in immediately, but these injuries could all but guarantee general manager Jim Nill will pull the trigger on a trade soon out of necessity. This is worth monitoring over the next few games on the east coast.
The Stars scored nine goals on Thursday and three more Saturday without the top line scoring any of them. Normally, any team's top line going scoreless would be cause for concern, but thanks to the second line in Dallas, that is not the case.
As noted earlier, Marchment is on a nine game point streak and had a goal and an assist today. Duchene had a goal and two assists and has points in 10 of his last 12 games. Tyler Seguin has points in eight of his last 12 and has four multi-point games in that stretch.
Depth will carry a team far come playoff time, and this line will go a long way in determining how far Dallas makes it.
The games don't get any easier from here, as the Stars are right back at it Monday afternoon against Boston before heading to face the Rangers in New York on Tuesday. Miro Heiskanen skated 26:40 against Edmonton, and with the defense shorthanded for the near future, he won't have any choice but to continue to shoulder the load alongside Thomas Harley until one of Lundkvist or Hakanpaa can return.
Maybe head coach Pete DeBoer breaks Harley and Heiskanen up to balance the pairings out more, or perhaps both just get double-shifted together and apart. Either way, the Stars are set to face their first real injury battle of the season until further notice.
