Tyler Seguin snapped his scoring drought and the penalty kill remained perfect, but a resurgent Pittsburgh defense and a costly injury marred a gritty road battle.

On Saturday, the Dallas Stars played the second game of a short road trip against another playoff team from last season, the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was a gruelling matchup, with neither side scoring until the second period, and Dallas ultimately fell in a shootout.

Jake Oettinger had his shutout streak ended at nine periods when Pittsburgh's Connor Dewar scored on a backhand shot that surprised him early in the second period. Dallas broke through with 30 seconds left in the period, when Tyler Seguin redirected a point shot to tie the game. The game went to a shootout, where the Stars scored twice but the Penguins scored three times to take the win.

Seguin Finally Breaks Through

The 34-year-old winger recorded his first goal of the season after going the first four games without one. It was a tough night for the entire Stars offense, and Seguin delivered when Dallas needed it most. It was his second straight game with a goal against the Penguins. He also scored Dallas' first goal in the shootout, answering Pittsburgh's Ben Kindel and keeping the Stars alive. It was a breakout game for Seguin, who will look to build on it.

Penguins Defense Bounces Back

Dallas entered hoping to take advantage of a Pittsburgh backend that had allowed three or more goals in four straight games. Instead, it was a bounce-back night for the Penguins. Goaltender Arturs Silovs made 24 saves and allowed just one goal, after giving up ten goals in his previous two starts. The Stars did what they could, but they also hurt themselves with mistakes.

Penalty Kill Sensational Again Despite Season-High Five Minors

Special teams were a plus for Dallas in Thursday's win over the Buffalo Sabres, when the Stars scored their first power-play goal of the season and continued to excel on the penalty kill. They stayed hot shorthanded against Pittsburgh, killing all five Penguins power plays after taking a season-high five minor penalties.

The night may have come at a cost, however, as Radek Faksa, one of the Stars' top penalty killers and a key depth forward, sustained a lower-body injury in the second period, left the game and did not return. The Czech forward will have until next Tuesday to get healthy when they return home to take on the Colorado Avalanche.
