Jake Oettinger’s historic shutout streak anchors a dominant defensive performance while the Dallas Finnish connection fuels the offense to keep the special teams units surging past Chicago.
Jake Oettinger has been on the short list of Vezina Trophy candidates for the past several seasons, and it is safe to say he is living up to that billing this year.
Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger (29) and left wing Jason Robertson (21) celebrate their win against the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesOettinger made history by being the fastest to record three shutouts in a season, doing it in only six starts. After shutting out San Jose and Buffalo consecutively, Oettinger once again blanked the score sheet with 19 saves in the 4-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday night.
And once again, the offense came predominantly from the Finnish contingent of the Stars, with Arttu Hyry scoring twice and Roope Hintz adding a goal after Jason Robertson got the scoring started.
Robertson's opening goal was a power play goal, as the offensive side of the special teams unit is starting to heat up to match the red hot penalty kill. Hyry scored the next two goals and almost had a third goal on a shorthanded breakaway.
Hyry is one of the key members of a penalty kill that has only allowed three power play goals against, two in the first period against Nashville in the second game of the season, and one 5-on-3 goal for Colorado in the first of the back-to-back games earlier in the week. In the other six games, the Stars PK has been perfect.
Wyatt Johnston rejoined the team after missing two games with an illness, just in time to fill the hole in the lineup left by Oskar Back, who will miss several weeks with a broken finger. David Perron, who signed a one-year deal with the Stars on Friday, did not play.
After two days off before the Blackhawks game, the Stars head home with two more days off until their next game against the Boston Bruins at the American Airlines Center on Tuesday.
